Dua Lipa revealed that she was inspired to write the song by the 1980s. According to the singer, the lyrics are about the initial feeling of falling in love when "you're in the honeymoon phase and everything is exciting and fun." She also comments that the song addresses the issue of women's empowerment.

The idea for the music video is inspired by “The Fischi and Weiss diagram”. Where we can see how these two gentlemen explain what the world around us is made of, having orgasm as the maximum expression of life. Dua Lipa decides to do the same but explaining the origin of Physical.

In this video we can see how each color represents something different and how color fills the screen with its full prominence, either at a monochrome level or with a combination of these.
